06. Phlebotomy - Obtaining Blood / Culture Results

Blood results can be obtained from pretty much any computer connected o the hospital network.

  • Log on to iLAB (APEX) from the PC, Username & Password
  • You may be asked for call back response – enter (in capitals) ZLN and hit enter. Next select option 1, Then 1 again to enter chart enquiry.
  • Enter the patients chart number.
  • In the surname enter the first 2 letters of the surname or } and hit enter.
  • The most recent patient bloods will be displayed on the screen in front of you.

Printing Results

  • Note some teams (surgical mainly) require that Interns keep daily flow sheets of the patients blood results for easier ward rounds.
  • You can obtain these flow sheets from the PC on ward 1D or design your own if you wish.
  • Tip: while viewing a result, pressing ā€œUā€ will bring up a flowsheet of all the recent blood test results

Note: Urgent ABG and Samples

  • If the situation is urgent take the samples directly to the lab for analysis. Specify to the technician that the samples are URGENT.
  • ABGs (routine) can be sent to biochemistry. If urgent you may have to process them yourself in either ED/iCU/3D
  • ABGs sent to biochemistry will not have a lactate value.
