It is your responsibility to check with your team that it is ok for you to take your annual leave. YOU ARE ENTITLED TO LEAVE. Get it in early to avoid any difficulties.
Organising cover
- It is your responsibility to organise cover for your call when you are on leave. This is generally easy to accomplish by organising a direct swap with somebody else on your rota who is taking holidays on a different week. You must inform Reception of any call swaps.
- A similar principle applies when you are on nights. Your bleep should always be with a member of your team/firm when you are not on site. Nurses will always use the intern as the point of contact and will not know if you are on nights.
- How busy a job is can peak and trough. Work as a team and cross cover each other especially when post-take or surgeon of the week. Something as small as an IV line can make a huge difference. You will be glad of the help when it’s your turn to be busy!
Holiday Authorisation
- There are new educational and annual leave policies in place that you should familiarise yourself with.
- Discuss holidays early on with your registrar.
Agreed Hours and EWTD
- The agreed hours of each specialty and subspeciality or team differ so it is important to clarify this with HR. These rostered hours provide your basic pay.
- Two medical and two surgical interns will work night shifts from Sun – Thurs (8pm – 9am) and Fri & Sat (8pm – 9am). Daytime will be covered by two medical and surgical interns on long day (8am – 9pm).
- During the weekdays, on-call jobs usually start at 5pm. However, on call interns must be available for emergencies during working hours 8am-5pm, where a member of another team is unavailable.
