Introduction: 2023/2024

Last updated on 20/06/2023

Dear Interns,

Your Intern year will undoubtedly be the most challenging year of your medical careers and one that you’ll never forget. Your mind is probably filled with many questions and concerns about what lies ahead: how will you cope? What exactly is expected of you? What if something goes wrong? Will I be able to do the jobs required of me? etc...

In anticipation of your arrival, we have compiled the 12th edition of the Intern Survival Guide for University Hospital Limerick. The aim of this guide is to not only be a conductive means to a smoother transition from medical school to Internship, but to also help you through a variety of situations both on call and by day.

This guide is not intended to replace the valuable advice of your colleagues, but can be used as a quick reference guide to assist you in your day-to-day activities.

We would like to wish you a warm welcome to Limerick and hope the year will prove to be an enjoyable one both educationally and personally.

Always remember, if in doubt, ask a colleague. Remember to not only look after your patients, but look after your own health and your fellow interns.

Best of Luck in the coming year,
Authors of the Intern Handbook 2023/24
